PhD in Clinical Psychology

This is a Clinical PhD program, but it's within a professional school context. We are really producing Clinicians. And a vast majority of our students go into clinical practice. Most of the major university programs are pure research. My focus is on -- Broadly on Health Psychology -- But within that I'm really focused on mind-body medicine, and that's of great interest lately. There's a lot of worldwide interest in mind-body medicine.

So we really work on trying to understand the science behind the relationship between mind and body. And the field that is called for that is called, "Applied Psychophysiology" or "Biofeedback" to help people with problems like anxiety, chronic pain, migraine headaches, gastrointestinal problems. And we have a pretty specialized program, one of the only ones in the country that really works on that.

So our students get trained in that and then they get to work in a clinic with real patients here on the campus. So if they're interested, say in my area, Biofeedback, they get great training on that. If they're interested in trauma [inaudible], they're going to be able to be in that research, but also apply it to what they're going to do as Clinical Psychologists. So I think that's our strength. We really work on that kind of bridge between research and clinical work. And we have people who are worldwide recognized people in areas that fit that bill.
